W latach 1944-1945 kilkadziesiąt tysięcy żołnierzy AK uwięziono i wywieziono do łagrów lub internowano w obozach przymusowej pracy, m.in. w Diagilewie i Ostaszkowie – nazwano ich później „Łagiernikami”. Część aresztowanych żołnierzy siłą wcielono do WP.
